Michael Jackson was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, an industrial suburb of Chicago. He was the seventh child of the Jackson family.

In 1968 as a member of The Jackson 5, he first signed to the Motown label and started having hits. He began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group, a career that saw him dubbed the “King of Pop.”

For many people Michael Jackson’s career can be divided into two parts: before Thriller and after Thriller.

Before Thriller

The Jackson 5 made a record when their first four singles (“I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There”) went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Disillusioned with Motown’s strict refusal to allow them creative input, The Jackson 5 left Motown and signed a new contract with CBS Records in June 1975. From 1976 to 1984, Michael Jackson was the lead songwriter of the group, writing hits such as “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)”, “This Place Hotel” and “Can You Feel It”.

Jackson jointly produced Off the Wall (1979) with Quincy Jones. Songwriters included Jackson, Heatwave’s Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney.

Then in 1982 he released – again co-producing with Quincy Jones – the album Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time

After Thriller

After Thriller came Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), none were to top Thriller in terms of sales but all massive successes nonetheless.

One thing that really strikes me is how many good songs he did after Thriller. Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror, Remember the Time, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, and The Way You Make Me Feel were all recorded by the singer when he was supposedly past his prime!

Another enjoyable piece of artwork. As for Jackson… I think I get his cultural importance. I will have to admit that songs like “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Dirty Diana” were pretty good rock songs. I’m a bit jaded though. I’d rather hear a Van Halen tune. Michael Jackson is a tragedy to me in more than just his death.

    I was a fan of Jacko when I was like 15 ..

I lived in Brazil and was the only person who knew about him and liked his song. That was before he became famous.

It’s interesting that the album Thriller was lingering about for 1 year and still no worldwide success. I remember my first K7-tape. It was given as a birthday present by a japanese girl.

Then suddenly everyone went wacko on jacko. Everyone became a fan. And that pissed me off a bit. Kind of stupid – but I didn’t want to be just another one from the crowd.

Then Michael Jackson released the song “Bad”. Which I thought it was pretty bad in the real sense of the word. So I gave up being a fan since.

But Thriller does bring memories from my childhood. And a special time when I felt the owner of something special exclusive and non-shared.

Obviously as a kid of that time, I knew all his songs by heart and cringe: knew how to impersonate all moves. He was a hero but not for long – only 18 months.

I wish Michael Jackson never became super famous. When you have too much power unchecked something always goes wrong.

Michael Jackson, what talent and potential. he unfortunately chose a slightly different way of life than projected when he was a little boy. it is ironic to me that through all of his scandals the press could not ahve been more offensive and then he dies and everything negative in his past is forgotten.

He is the “Elvis” of our generation. Unfortunately so many people only appreciated this after is death, and spent too much time trying to crucify him during his lifetime…
